HELLENIC NURSES' ASSOCIATION (HNA)


The Hellenic Nurses’ Association (Η.Ν.Α.) was founded in 1923 and became a member of the International Council of Nurses (I.C.N.) in 1929.
It is a scientific professional Association, which constitutes the voice of all Greek Nurses and represents them at national and international level. Its long history, its continuously developing activities and its stability guarantee the auspicious prospects of the Greek nursing.

The objectives of the Association, as referred in its constitution, are:

  • The promotion and development of nursing as science and art
  • The formation of criteria for exercising the nursing profession
  • The representation of the profession, the documented free voice of opinion on matters concerning the nursing profession
  • The participation of the profession in planning the health policy at local and national level
  • The representation of the profession in the international nursing field and its close co-operation with other international organizations
  • The unity and co-operation of all nurses for achieving solidarity among them, mutual understanding and support, cooperation for the solution of current nursing problems, the promotion of the social status and authority of the nursing profession for the benefit of their moral, social and financial justifications as well as for the best nursing care of the public.

At International level HNA co-operates with:

  • European forum of National Nursing and Midwifery Associations and WHO (EFNNMA & WHO)
  • The European Federation of Nurses Associations (EFN)
  • The World Health Organization (WHO)
  • The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS)
  • The European Federation of Critical Care Nursing Association (EfCCNA)
  • The International Federation of Nursing Anesthesiology Association (IFNA)
  • The European Federation of Nurse Educators (FINE)
  • International Labor Office (ILO)
  • Federation of Occupational Health Nurses within the E.U. (FOHNEU)
  • Paediatric Nursing Associations of Europe (PNAE)
  • International Association of Paediatric Nurses (IAPN)
  • European Society of Emergency Nurses (ESEN)

At National level the HNA co-operates with:

  • The State Authorities
  • Professional Health Organizations
  • Trade Unions
  • Specialist nurses’ s groups
  • Educational Institutes

The H.N.A ‘s administerial function includes 12 Regional Branches all over Greece. These Branches are autonomously functioning in co-operation, of course, with the central administration of H.N.A

The H.N.A. establishes groups of nurse-specialists. The purpose of these groups is the continual education of their members as well as the discussion of common problems.

  • Emergency and Intensive Care Nursing
  • Nursing Education
  • Primary Health Care and Community Nursing
  • Mental Health Nursing
  • Pediatric Nursing

The HNA organizes annual Panhellenic Nursing Congresses in Athens and in provinces in May. These Congresses are very welcomed by all nurses and student nurses. It also organizes various one or two day seminars all year round. (See here the website of the 38th Panhellenic Nursing Congress)

It publishes a quarterly scientific nursing Journal “NOSILEFTIKI” - is the official scientific journal of the Hellenic Nurses’ Association (Η.Ν.Α.), which has been published since 1962. Its contents and full abstracts are available in the Greek Medical Data Base “Iatrotek” (2002) and in “CINAHL” (2008), the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature International Database. The journal is under evaluation by SCOPUS and EBSCO. "Nosileftiki" is addressed both to nurses of all specialties and to other health professionals. It publishes also, a monthly informative newsletter and a quarterly newsletter on “Emergency and Intensive Care Nursing”.

It annually grants 3 scholarships.

It provides a library for its members and student nurses.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Association is managed by a Council consisted of eleven (11) members elected by secret ballot every four (4) years.
An Administrative Committee consisted of three (3) members is also elected by secret ballot every four (4) years.

HEADQUARTERS

They are located centrally in Athens at the Athens Tower, C’ Building, 2 Messogion Avenue, GR-11527 Athens. They are on the 2nd floor and they are 206 m2.
